TRU Landscape Services was called out to Yorba Linda to repair a broken sprinkler. Yorba Linda is a city in Orange County, California. After seeing the broken sprinkler we informed the customer it was over spraying into the street by five feet. There were other sprinklers in this area also over spraying onto the street. The customer told us that the sprinklers were only 2 years old. They told us the name of the company that installed them and we were surprised that they did this sloppy work. We gave the customer an estimate to move some sprinklers around and they approved it. The estimate was a few hundred dollars. We installed new Toro precision nozzles. These nozzles will save up to 35% of the water used. The customer was already saving money by calling us out. We installed new nozzles on all of the sprinklers in this area, this corrected the over spray problem . The customer was wondering why their car always had water spots on it. The sprinklers were spraying it every time they left it in the street. Plus they were sending thousands of gallons of water straight into the storm drains. Many water districts in Orange County are raising their water rates. Plus many of the water districts are putting customers on tier systems for their invoice charges. The tier systems go by how much water is used. Customers who use larger amounts of water will land in the higher tiers and will be penalized for this. One more great benefit is after the new timer is installed there is very little adjustment required. Your sprinkler run off will be cut down too. These new Et. timers will water one area for a small amount of time. Then move onto another area in your landscape, water for a short time and then go back to the first area to water some more. This gives the water time to soak into the soil. Plants with deeper root systems require more water. The sprinkler timer will turn these areas on and off many times during the water window to achieve this goal. Your current sprinkler timer would turn on for a long time and a large amount of this water will run off of the landscape and be wasted. We had a customer ask why I can’t set my sprinkler timer for a shorter amount of run time and have multiple start times. The answer is yes you can and we recommend this. You just need to watch the weather and when it’s colder out turn down the amount of water being used. The new smart timers do this for you the whole year.
